In April 2026, the Texas Attorney General opened a formal investigation into whether Lululemon’s clothing contains PFAS, commonly called “forever chemicals,” despite marketing itself as a health-conscious brand. Separately, independent lab testing by consumer group Mamavation found detectable organic fluorine — the chemical marker used to identify PFAS — in some Lululemon products, which led to an active lawsuit now in the discovery phase.
This isn’t limited to one brand: PFAS has historically been used industry-wide in activewear for its water- and stain-resistant properties, applied at the fabric-mill level, sometimes before a clothing brand even places its order. Research also shows sweat measurably increases how much of these chemicals transfer from fabric to skin compared to dry contact — relevant for anything tight and worn for a long workout.
What the Marketing Stretches
Lululemon states it phased out intentionally-added PFAS by 2023 and caps trace fluorine at 50 parts per million with third-party testing — and as of now, no regulator or court has found wrongdoing; this is an open investigation, not a proven finding. It’s also not accurate to treat this as one villain brand: PFAS use has been widespread across the activewear industry, and singling out any one company misses the bigger, systemic issue.
On the other side, “PFAS-free” marketing claims deserve the same scrutiny — a brand simply saying it doesn’t guarantee anything without a real certification behind it.
What Is Worth Your Money
Skip anything relying on vague claims like “eco-friendly” or “clean” with no certification attached. Look instead for OEKO-TEX Standard 100 or GOTS-certified pieces, or fabrics that don’t need chemical treatment to perform in the first place — organic cotton, TENCEL, merino wool.
